How to use VitalSource etexts

What are eTexts?

eTexts are digital textbooks which you can read online or download to your smartphone, tablet or laptop. 

How do eTexts differ from library ebooks?

  • Library ebooks (such as DawsonEra or EBSCO ebooks) are designed to be downloaded ("borrowed") for a specific period of time and may be limited to the number of concurrent users. 
  • eTexts on the other hand personal copies of a digital textbook and are yours to keep forever.  You can download them to your devices and access them whenever you need. 

Our eTexts can be read in 3 ways:

  1. Read from the OLE module.
  2. Downloaded to your tablet, smartphone or laptop*
  3. Read online via


* Your eTexts can be downloaded to up to two computers and two mobile devices.




For the best reading experience we strongly recommend setting up a Bookshelf account and downloading eTexts to your tablet or smartphone device


Getting Started with eTexts

Create Bookshelf Account

Download App

Add eTexts to your Bookshelf account



  1. Go to
  2. Create a Bookshelf account by clicking on Create an account and following the online instructions. 
  1. Go to
  2. Click Download Bookshelf and follow the instructions. Apps are available for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac.
  3. Once installed, open the Bookshelf app and sign in with your Bookshelf account.
  1. Log in to the OLE and go to your module
  2. Click on the eText tab on the menu
  3. Click on the book cover top open.

Repeat for each new module.

Reading eTexts in the OLE

Where an eText is provided you can access it via your OLE module

  1. Log in to the OLE
  2. Click on the eText tab on the left hand menu of your OLE module
  3. Click on the cover to open the eText. 


Reading eTexts online

To read books online

Once you have created a Bookshelf account you can add any eTexts to your bookshelf and then access your entire bookshelf online at

  1. Go to
  2. Log in using your Bookshelf account. All digital eTexts that are associated with your account (i.e. for the modules you are enrolled on) will be displayed.
  3. Click on a book cover to open


eTexts are only associated with your Bookshelf account once you have logged into your OLE module and opened the eText. We recommend that at the start of each term you access your new eTexts and associate them with your Bookshelf account.

Downloading eTexts

Once you have created a Bookshelf account you can read offline using free BookShelf apps for your laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Installing the Bookshelf app

  1. Go to
  2. Click on Download Bookshelf to install the application. Installing an app on your devices allows you to access your etexts without being connected to the internet. Apps are available for iOS, Android, PC and Mac.
  3. Follow the appropriate instructions for the device you wish to install the application on.
  4. Once installed open the Bookshelf app and sign in with your Bookshelf account.
